Are you a potential Management Millennial?

Your parents

The values of the Baby Boomer generation were based on a strong work ethic, respect for authority, loyalty, strong financial management, long-term planning, and delayed gratification.

You

Have grown up with parents from an overworked era and have seen strain/stress grow before their eyes. Having seen this, you have a desire for work that means something and work which you can heavily contribute to. Therefore, this work needs to create happiness, and if this cannot be fulfilled within the workplace, then you will seek satisfaction elsewhere.

You have a great need to be fulfilled within the workplace while still having time to run with things you are passionate about. As a new generation, you cannot be compared to previous generations, because learning and professional development are essential to you as is a driving desire for a flexible work-life balance.

Your generation, the Millennials, is changing the business world. Information is now the most prized commodity and creative thinking the most sought-after skill, something you have in spades. Your workforce expectations do not fit with the Traditional management model that you are subjected to every working day. This model fails you completely. Unlike your parents before you, you are not prepared to be quiet about this, and you are making your feelings known about your attitudes towards work and your expectations about how you want to be treated in the workplace and by your managers.

Did I get that right?

Well, then you should know this. The longer you are exposed to managers who manage using the Traditional management style (see my The Management Model of High-Performance Teams - Make sure to link to this post) the greater the danger that you will emulate their management style. In fact, it will just subconsciously happen, even if you consciously try to fight against it. To make matters worse, you belong to an ambitious generation that wants promotion and responsibility fast (nothing wrong with that as long as you're appropriately trained). But in 90% of cases, that's not going to happen because your traditional managers just don’t work that way. Nor do 90% of traditional organizations (which account for 99.9% of all organizations).

The problem you have

Either learn how to manage differently or succumb to the same methods your managers use. Learn a management style that not only satisfies all of your needs (yes, I said all) but one that positions you for promotion to management in the shortest possible time. This is not a silly sales spiel; what I’m proposing is a proven method that I have used for a long time. (My background and reputation is as a management and teams troubleshooter, training managers on Transformational management and how to build high-performance teams, and I don’t mean the kind you google, I mean real ones.)

The Solution?

Teach yourself the newer, progressive Transformational management style.

It is a consistent and interactive management style which works best for your generation and the new workforce. A style that encourages regular, open conversations, provides feedback and comments about your work, with reviews and suggestions for how to do better, especially if you are looking to progress to management. It recognises that teamwork is high on your agenda with regular team meetings and collaboration with colleagues being essential. It facilitates openness and transparency, support and motivation, challenge, mentoring, acquisition of new skills and if you're exceptionally lucky, a chance to be a member of a high-performance team because then you can do anything.

The Millennial workforce can be completely satisfied by using a Transformational leadership style combined with the use of high-performance teams.

It's from my experience base that I have created a NEW management course, How to rapidly become a High-Performance Team Leader and Builder.

The best approach to using the course is to train yourself first on the new skills, tools and techniques, which can take as little as two to four weeks. Then at your own pace, put into practice what you have learnt and then roll the course out to the remainder of your team, again at your own pace, taking anywhere from one to six months.

Record your course progress using structured lesson worksheets in a Course Workbook that contains exercises, tools and other resources. The Workbook becomes a complete reference guide for all of your management decisions and conclusions made during the course. It acts as a ready reckoner of solutions, options and approaches to problems and issues that you will face later on. You can use the course to train just yourself, then your team, or both at the same time.

The ‘How to rapidly become a High-Performance Team Leader and Builder’ course is not only great value; it is a comprehensive management guide. I have worked with a great number of managers, people and teams across a wide variety of organizations. The most important and beneficial things I have learned from reorganizing business and IT departments, rescuing and creating teams and especially building high-performance teams, are included in this course.

The course has been peer and quality reviewed, is exceptional value, especially given the range and degree of content. The course also includes tips, techniques, templates and skills transfer, all condensed into a short, self-paced, two to four-week course.
